British author Philip Pullman long ago established himself as a master storyteller, achieving international fame with the His Dark Materials trilogy of fantasy novels: Northern Lights, published in North America as The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.
Around the time that first book in the trilogy was published, Pullman also released two smaller volumes for slightly younger readers. Thunderbolt’s Waxworks and The Gas-Fitters’ Ball were published in Britain in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Set in Victorian London, they were simple whodunits told with verve and humour.
Now those two books appear on this side of the Atlantic, published as a single volume: Two Crafty Criminals!, subtitled And How They Were Captured by the Daring Detectives of the New Cut Gang.
