how to convert avchd to mp4 on pc?

I need to convert AVCHD files into MOV in order to be able to not only open them on my computer but to have them in a format supported by FCP 7 in order to be edited.
I tried downloading several conversion software applications but they all failed. Is there an official one from Apple that I can easily purchase at the app store or any other suggestions?"
