As soon as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell put the Jacksonville Jaguars on the clock during the NFL Draft Thursday night, pockets of enthusiastic fans at the St. Johns Town Center started the chant, “Let’s go Blackmon! Let’s go Blackmon! Let’s go Blackmon!”
Moments later, the chants turned into a thundering roar of approval when Jacksonville made the wide receiver from Oklahoma State the fifth overall pick.
Hours before the draft started, fans packed into the parking lots and walkways around Suite and Whisky River. And it was clear long before the draft started, most wanted the Jaguars to move up in the picking order and pick Blackmon.
Fans watched the big-screen television in the courtyard and packed around smaller sets inside the restaurants. As soon as Jacksonville moved from seventh to fifth in the draft, anticipation quickly turned into excitement.
“I wanted a wide receiver,” Ponte Vedra’s Lora Burnett said. “I wanted Blackmon! I can’t believe it!”
More than 3,000 fans joined the celebration, and very few went home unhappy. Blackmon clearly was the crowd favorite, even among those who will be playing beside him on Sunday.
“That was a great pick,” defensive back Kevin Rutland said while standing elbow-to-elbow with other fans. “He’s a great player. This is exciting.”
Offensive tackle Cameron Bradfield stood in the middle of the crowd with Rutland.
“This is a great day for the Jacksonville Jaguars,” he said.
Ed Bican of Jacksonville wanted the Jaguars to concentrate on offense. He was afraid the team would take South Carolina defensive end Melvin Ingram. He offered a toast with his bottled beer as soon as the team took Blackmon.
“With so much talent out there, I didn’t think they could go wrong,” he said. “But I wanted them to draft on offense. Justin Blackmon is the man.”
Burnett and Diane Bennett of Jacksonville moved to the First Coast two years ago from Cleveland. They’ve traded their Browns gear for teal. Burnett even sleeps with a Jaguars pillow.
“There’s a much different energy this year,” Bennett said. “I love this. They want to win. I wanted Blackmon and we got him.”
Former Jaguars player Tony Boselli shook hands and celebrated with hundreds of fans after the pick. The challenge for the new ownership and coaching staff is to transform the excitement of draft night into wins on Sunday.
“I loved it,” he said. “Justin Blackmon is a big-time receiver. They were worried he wouldn’t be there at [No.] 7, so they made the move.
“It was an outstanding, aggressive move. You have to love the reaction. You have to love the pick.”
Two hours after the selection, fans were still in a partying mood.
“That was a brilliant move,” Jacksonville’s David Tyson said. “Blackmon is a man’s man. This is the best move our team’s made in a long time.
“I can’t wait for the season to start.”
