This came about because I once said in public that every child, and every grown-up ought to be able to have a collection of the great fairy tales. My publisher David Fickling thought that was a good idea, and set up a series of little books in which modern authors were asked to tell a fairy tale of their own choice. I chose this one, because it’s always been a favourite of mine. It’s a variation of Cinderella, and I told it in a rhythmic sort of way, almost as if it was a poem. But you wouldn’t know that unless you read it aloud.
